East Preview: A win secures the title for Morpeth

By James Gordon

Morpeth Town can secure the EVO-STIK League East Division title with a win over second-placed Pontefract Collieries.

With four wins in a row under their belt at home, the Highwaymen will be confident of overcoming Pontefract on home soil. However, Collieries are the most in-form side in the competition, having picked up 26 from a possible 30 in recent weeks.

Below them, there are still six teams with a realistic hope of reaching the play-offs, with Ossett United, Brighouse Town and Sheffield FC all locked on 62 points and Tadcaster six points further back, with Cleethorpes Town and Marske United within two points of them. Ossett can improve their run of five wins in six when they host Marske United, who are eight points adrift of the top five.

Having failed to win in their last three, Brighouse will seek to rectify their recent form away at 15th-placed Pickering Town, while Sheffield go up against Cleethorpes, who need to win to keep their slim hopes of the play-offs alive.

Slightly further down, Michael Morton and Simon Collins’ Albion know that they can’t afford to slip up against a Frickley side with one win in their last four at home. Another three points for the visitors could leave them just three points below the sides above if results go their way.

In the midfield pack, Stamford can end their run of just one win in eight at home to Belper Town, while Loughborough will seek to end their five-game losing run away at Spalding United.

With time running out for Carlton and Gresley, both will hope that home wins are forthcoming this weekend. Town face a Stocksbridge side with three wins in their last four, while the league’s basement side go up against AFC Mansfield, who can ease their relegation fears with three points.

In the final game of the round, Lincoln United take on Wisbech Town. With just three points separating the Fenmen and the drop-zone, they cannot afford to slip up against United, who have picked up just two wins in their last eight at Ashby Avenue.
